Understanding Insulation & R-Value

Not all garage doors are built the same. The right insulation level depends on how you use your garage, your climate, and your energy goals. Here's what you need to know before you choose.

What is R-Value?

R-value measures a material's resistance to heat flow. The higher the R-value, the better the insulation. For garage doors, R-values typically range from R-0 (no insulation) up to R-18 or higher for premium insulated doors. A higher R-value means your garage stays warmer in winter, cooler in summer, and your home's HVAC system works less hard — saving you money over time.

Basic
R-0
Non-Insulated

A single-layer steel door with no insulation. The most affordable option upfront, but offers no thermal or noise protection.

Best for:

  • ✓ Detached garages not connected to living space
  • ✓ Storage-only garages
  • ✓ Mild climates with minimal temperature swings
  • ✓ Budget-conscious replacements
Popular
R-6 – R-9
Single-Layer Insulated

A polystyrene foam layer bonded to the door panel. A solid middle-ground that improves energy efficiency and reduces noise without a big price jump.

Best for:

  • ✓ Attached garages adjacent to living areas
  • ✓ East Tennessee's hot summers & cold winters
  • ✓ Reducing street noise and outside sounds
  • ✓ Most homeowners — best value for the money
Premium
R-13 – R-18
Triple-Layer Insulated

A steel-polyurethane-steel sandwich construction. Polyurethane foam is injected and expands to fill every gap, creating a rigid, quiet, and highly efficient door.

Best for:

  • ✓ Heated or air-conditioned garages
  • ✓ Home gyms, workshops, or hobby spaces
  • ✓ Maximum noise reduction
  • ✓ Long-term energy savings & durability

Not Sure Which Level Is Right for You?

🏠

Attached Garage?

Go with at least R-6. Heat and cold transfer directly into your home through an uninsulated door.

🔧

Use It as a Workspace?

R-13 or higher keeps your shop comfortable year-round and makes heating or cooling far more efficient.

📦

Storage Only?

R-0 or R-6 is usually fine. Save your budget and put it toward style upgrades like windows or hardware.
